What if I'm not a "straight A" student?
Apply! Many scholarships are based on financial need or other criteria that does not focus on GPA.
What if I'm not sure where I'll be going to school?
Indicate your preferences for schools on your application. This will not affect your eligibility for most scholarships as long as you continue to meet the specific guidelines for the scholarship.
How do I know if I'm eligible?
Each scholarship has specific eligibility criteria defined by the donor when the fund was created. Check to see which awards you are eligible for by reading the guidelines. Note: Employees, volunteers or board members of the Community Foundation of the Verdugos, or family of scholarship fund holders are not eligible. Individuals directly related to members of a scholarship fund's selection committee are ineligible for those particular awards.
How many scholarships may I apply for?
You may apply for any scholarship that you are eligible for.
Is it free to apply?
Yes. There is no application fee.
Are any awards large enough to pay the full cost of my education?
No. In addition to applying for Community Foundation of the Verdugos scholarships, you should explore other financial aid resources such as federal and state grants, loans and work-study awards, as well as other scholarships available from the college itself. Your college financial aid office can put a complete financial aid package together.
Do I need to pay scholarship money back?
No. These are charitable grants that do not require repayment.
When will I be notified that I am a recipient of a scholarship award?
Applicants will be notified through mail by April 30, 2012.
Who selects the recipients?
The Community Foundation of the Verdugos Scholarship Selection Committee, along with scholarship committees established as needed for each scholarship, reviews applications and selects recipients.
What happens if I am selected as a scholarship recipient?
Whether you are awarded a scholarship or not, you will be notified either way by mail. For those selected for a scholarship, your school counselors will also be notified. You will receive instructions on how to retrieve your scholarship funds in the award letter.
If I am selected as a recipient, how and when do I receive a check?
The scholarship check will not be disbursed until you provide the Community Foundation of the Verdugos with a completed Enrollment Verification Form, which is mailed to you when you receive the award letter. Upon receipt of the completed form returned by the student, or his/her school, the Community Foundation of the Verdugos will mail the scholarship award check directly to your school with instructions that the funds be used toward your education. You will receive a copy of the letter that your school receives. Because many schools do not provide enrollment verification until classes start, checks are usually distributed between August and October.
What happens if I don't send in my Enrollment Verification Form?
If you don't return your Enrollment Verification Form by the deadline, you will lose your scholarship award. The scholarship check is not mailed automatically to your school. We must have your completed Enrollment Verification Form. If we don't get it, then your school does not get a check.
